The main state level competition commences tomorrow and I thought I would take the time to share some basic information on competition nutrition. Swimmers (and their parents) dedicated countless hours travelling to training, and large amounts of effort to train to their potential. If you get to the championship competition and don’t refuel properly you’re throwing away all of the hard work you’ve put in.
The following is just a guide with suggestions for what to eat. One of the most important points is to limit the amount of sugar that you’re consumming. Sugar is the enemy of success when it’s consummed in large doses, it has a very negative effect on performance. If you eat adequate foods before competition and at the right time throughout competition your reliance on sugar for fuel doesn’t need to exist.
